Where & when to travel — by value, not by ads

Travelia is a free, map-first way to find where and when a trip is worth it. It scores ~234,000 places worldwide and paints them as a live, interactive heatmap, so you can see at a glance which destinations fit your trip, in your month, from your home town — all-in.

The Travelia Index isn't a fixed rating

This is the key thing. The colour of a place is not a static star rating baked onto the location — not a TripAdvisor bubble score, a Booking.com rating, or a Michelin star. It's computed live, for you, every time you move a control.

The Index blends several dials — climate fit, value (all-in cost), reach (how far/awkward the journey is from your home), safety, salience, and the trip's quality — into one 0–100 number. So the same place can glow for a July beach trip and go dark for January, or rank differently for a culture trip than a beach one, or shift when you change your home town or nudge a preference slider. There is no single "score" for a city; there's only its score for the trip you're describing.

Three maps — switch with the layers button

Use the layers button (bottom-right, the stacked-diamonds icon) to switch between:

  • Trip fit — the Travelia Index heatmap: brighter = a better-value match.
  • Temperature — average temperature for the chosen month.
  • Rainfall — how wet that month tends to be.

Then steer it: pick a month on the bottom strip, set the trip type and who's going, and tune the five preference sliders (middle = off) in the left panel. Drag the knob on the right-hand Index scale to hide everything below a threshold. Click any dot to open its full card — live weather, an all-in cost comparison (do-it-yourself vs a package), photos and nearby ideas.

Free, forever — no ads, no selling

Travelia is genuinely free and carries no ads. It isn't a reseller and takes no commission — the "check live price" links are plain, un-tagged courtesy links. It runs entirely in your browser, with no account required. It uses privacy-respecting Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage — which places and features people explore — so it can keep improving.

Data & method — and how fresh it is

Travelia is built on open data — we don't invent the facts, we combine and score them. Here's exactly where each layer comes from:

  • Climate (temperature, rainfall, sun) — WorldClim 10-arc-minute monthly normals.
  • Sea temperature — NOAA OISST monthly climatology.
  • Safety — the US State Department and UK FCDO travel advisories, combined with World Bank homicide rates (a country flags as risky if any source does).
  • Destinations & geography — GeoNames (~234k places) and Natural Earth coastlines.
  • Culture & heritage — Wikidata / Wikipedia (incl. UNESCO sites) and built-heritage density from OpenStreetMap.
  • Live weather, FX & holidays — Open-Meteo, frankfurter.dev, date.nager.at, fetched when you open a card.
  • Photos — hotlinked from Wikimedia Commons, Unsplash and Pexels, credited on each card.
  • Prices — a seasonal model of our own, calibrated against real hotel and package samples (see the caveat below).

The six dials above are how a place earns its colour; the full data sources and licences are in the terms.

The all-in prices on each card are seasonal modelled estimates — not live quotes. What is reliable: the relative shape — which month is cheaper, and whether self-assembling or taking a package beats the other for your trip. What is indicative: the absolute ~€ total. Cross-check the "check flights / check stay" links (Google Flights and Booking.com, no affiliate tag) for a real price before you book.

Data as of —. Safety advisories and prices are indicative estimates, refreshed periodically — always confirm the current travel advice and a live price before you book.
